Forest Fling
Here are a few photos from this weeks update. We took a short road trip out to enjoy a little of the late spring weather.
The forest out here in Western Washington never ceases to amaze me. It is such a magical place. Being a transplant from the Midwest people from back home often wonder why I love it out here so much. They have a perception of this rainy and miserable place where the sun never shines and well, during the winter sometimes it does feel that way. But all that rain produces some of the lushest forests in the United States. I love being out in the woods in the spring right after everything has leafed out and before summer dries things out too much. The different shades of green and different layers and textures created by the foliage and mosses is truly stunning. The huge evergreen trees create a canopy and diffuses the light as it filters in. That’s why many of the understory plants like the Vine Maple leaf out horizontally. It’s an attempt to capture any of the sunlight they can and it ends up creating a beautifully layered effect. It’s amazing that the Sword ferns and Salal growing close to the forest floor get any light at all. But all the plants have co evolved to create this wonderful environment.
The smells are also incredible. It’s a weird mixture of scents with things decaying and things blossoming and flourishing. The circle of life and all that. But it creates kind of a sweet, dank, musky aroma that I just find intoxicating.

As time marches on, you just get more and more beautiful.
